Safety… that’s Why’! A community without rules yields chaos … resulting in unsafe environment. Construction folks building a structure ( I.e. building, bridge, road, etc.) without following the building codes set forth by the Civil Engineering Board put a lot of risk to people using that structure.
That’s just fine and good and must be… include manufacturing industry in that bucket.
However, in a place where innovation is valued, you don’t want such aforementioned constraints (I.e. rules, standards, playbook, etc); what you want is a lean-agile mindset… where relentless and continuous improvement, and innovation are valued highly. Apple is case in point — they innovated with the first iPhone and did not stop there … their iPhone Xs Max is awesome!
