At the end of the day, it is the outcome — the value in the hands of the customer — that matters. Measure the outcome via Key Performance Indicators ( KPI), Objective and Key Results (OKR), Employee Engagement, etc.
We can measure the flow of value… and be great at making value flow without interruptions … as we evolve…
We can measure our competencies …and be great at those as we evolve…
Yet… nothing is truly valuable to the marketplace until it is realized in the hands of the customer! Think of: work in process, deployed but in dark mode, partially done work, etc.
Hence… the focus on the outcome… and having the extreme flexibility on the approach towards achieving it.
Know your outcome… and change your approach to it if it is not working.
Keep your eyes on the outcome! And enjoy the journey (wherein lies lots of discoveries, risks, dependencies, challenges, opportunities, etc. ) as well! Yes, do both!
