“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.” — Mark Twain

Mark Twain’s statement left an indelible mark on our consciousness. Hence we value travelling a lot. To broaden our views of people and things.

We plan our travels in a meaningful way — so it is more memorable.

years ago, on the year when our son is 16 years old, we (the whole family) went to the Philippines and Japan.

This year, 2023, the year that our daughter is 16 years old, we (the whole family) went to the Philippines and Australia.

My wife and I lived and worked in Australia for lot of years. Our exposure to a lot of different cultures way back then totally broadened our views. We want the same thing to happen to our kids — broaden their views of people and things. Plus, they love our travels as a family!

Key Idea: Broaden your perspective. Embrace divergent thinking where people of diverse backgrounds provide their input to the same subject matter on hand. Can you imagine being in a place where people are thinking the same way? The same view? Nothing new is emerging. Boring! It’s like in an echo chamber! Not cool.

Expand your horizons through divergent thinking… and if you sustain the conversation for a longer period (in days)… new ideas will emerge… this is called emergent thinking.

Having a broad view of people and things allows the best ideas for optimal solution to emerge.

There are many other ideas like this — short but sweet ideas —  in my new book, ‘SAFe (6.0) Is like …’ . It is available on Amazon… and it has reached ‘# 1 New Release’ several times! Check it out.
