Scrum = Football, A Metaphor

Scrum meetings = Huddle
A day of work = a down, In football, the team gets 4 chances to move the football forward 10 yards.
A Sprint = First and ten. In football, the team gets 4 chances to move the football forward 10 yards. The first down is the first chance (the first time the team tries to move the ball). IF the team moves forward 10 or more yards, they’ve “made” the first down. Now they get 4 chances to move the football forward 10 yards AGAIN. They get another first down.

If they don’t get the full 10 yards, maybe only 6 yards forward, they’d have to go 4 yards on their second chance. We’d say they are Second down and four.

One of the main objectives in American football — and a necessary one to score points — is to gain a first down. In order to get a first down, the offense must gain 10 yards within a series of four plays.

Delivery to production = Scoring (touchdown; field goal).
