Autonomy. The 'Carrots and stick' approach is not effective to move, really move, a person towards a goal... it is artificial... it is not coming from within. Extrinsic motivation like this is not effective. Intrinsic motivation, however, is effective... it comes from within. What makes a person tick? That's what a transformational coach needs to be aware of ... and use that as clue as to how he /she can influence the coachee.
