Happy Father’s Day

Day 86. Brunch! Prepared by my family! The most famous chess game — the applause — game 6 of the 1972 world chess championship between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky. Framed as gift to me from my wife, son and daughter. They know I am a Fischer — Spassky fan and chess enthusiast. Thank you to my family for a great Father’s Day celebration!

Another Face Of Racism

Day 74. Last night, my family and I watched the premier of ESPN’s ‘Be Water’ under their ‘30 for 30’ series. Since the covid-19 lockdown, this is the first time we got out of the house this far ... 2 hours from our place. It’s great to recharge and relax... specially with family. Biltmore’ Rose garden is in full bloom!

100% utilization of any system is not good; it is not Lean Agile... 80% utilization or less is best. What is a system? A system is any assemblage or set of correlated members. A human body is a system... needs downtime ... needs rest... needs nourishment. People who are working on a system are also part of that system... they also need downtime. In SAFe, the last iteration of the program increment is called Innovation and Planning'... this is where 'downtime' happens... no usual work is planned into it. Instead, creative endeavors like hackathon, research, learning, retrospective, and planning for…

Chilling with Hot Coffee

It's good to have downtime once in a while to combat 'staleness'. Give your team some slack... downtime... they'll come back refreshed with greater energy. 'Luxury in a cup' -- the foundational idea of the Starbucks business... and its true! I use it as 'downtime in a cup'. Man is meant to produce and rest enough ... not too much rest though ... otherwise the 'weeds will take over the garden'!

Series (7 of 7): Building High-Performing ART — “Give your ART Downtime”

Give your agile Teams and team of Agile teams some downtime...space. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy! The same is true for your ART. Let them be creative and innovative -- away from the current work -- during this downtime. Remember, innovation is very important to any enterprise's future. In SAFe, this downtime is called the 'Innovation and Planning (IP) Iteration. The last iteration before the next Program Increment (PI). Here is another beauty of this IP Iteration -- in addition to being a space for innovation: It is a built-in buffer (albeit small) between Program…
