Measure and Visualize the Trend of “Actual over Planned” Ratio

Measure and Visualize the Trend of “Actual over Planned” Ratio

There is a topic my new book, "SAFe Is Like ...", titled "Measure Actual Versus Planned" . It tackles the fact that a lot of us measure planned velocity and actual velocity; however, a lot of us stop short. Too short. We forget to go after two key and critical things needed to measure the probability of us meeting our promises (planned) against what we do – which in turn impacts our Predictability. These two, together, determine our Probabilistic Predictability! Our predictability is very important to people who are waiting for their "valuable things" to be delivered by us with…

Predictability Versus Agility Part II

Day 43. SAFe measures the predictability of the Solution Train (Large Solution level), Agile Release Train (Program Level) and Teams (Team level). Note: starting from SAFe 5.0, Program level and Team level became one and given a new name: Essential. Business wants delivery of value to be predictable. FedEx gets my business because of their 100% predictability. ‘The world on time’ is their slogan. Read my earlier post: Lessons From FedEx https://leanagileguru.com/2019/05/10/learn-from-fedex/ Predictability is alive and paramount in SAFe, yet SAFe remains Agile... and Lean! Business Agility is also paramount. ‘Business Agility’ is what SAFe 5.0 is all about... and…

What to Do with Story Not Done

What to Do with Story Not Done

Using your team's Definition of Done' (DoD), a Story is either done or not done. Period. No points credited to the team for that iteration for the perceived percentage of the 'Done' part of the Story. That story goes back to the backlog to be reprioritized with the rest, replanned, and resized (as a result of earlier work, more is now known and complexity lessened). The reason why people are so anal about receiving credit points to partially done Story is their quest for a favorable outlook of their own predictability ratio... which is the total points accepted divided by…

Lessons From FedEx

Lessons From FedEx

'The world on time' -- FedEx That tag line alone makes you pause, think and say to yourself: 'Yes, I'll send my valuable package via FedEx!' Why? One word: Predictability. Is your Agile Release Train (ART) predicable? Delivering business objectives as planned and committed to? Is your Agile Team predictable? Delivering iteration goals as planned and committed to? FedEx get my business because I can plan with their dependability and predictability. Business owners, product managers (product management) and product owners look for predictability of ARTs and Agile Teams... for them to keep delivering business value to the world on time…

I Trust My Train! It is Very Predictable!

I Trust My Train! It is Very Predictable!

I do not sweat my early morning commute and late afternoon commute. I take the train to and from work. I can sleep whilst in transit. My train is on time all the time...therefore I can plan ahead with the published train schedule. My train is predictable! They even solved the "long queue" problem. I can purchase my ticket with the train's mobile app via my mobile phone whilst in transit...I jump into the train (not moving train of course) ... no need to queue at the train ticket station anymore! I trust my train! It's cadence (schedule/routine) is predictable...…
