I am very ecstatic about Lean taking center stage with SAFe 6.0. I have been a Lean aficionado since the 1980s… and an Agilist since the 1990s… and I have had appreciation of this “Lean and Agile” pair back then (and I still do).
In this era of Software and Digital, we, the knowledge workers, produce value through our “Lean Agile Software Factory“… mimicking the Lean Factory of the Industrial Revolution era.
The whole Lean factory is a funded Value Stream that is producing value. Likewise, in SAFe, the whole Lean Agile Software Factory is a funded Value Stream that is producing value, and it is not funded per project!
Fund the whole Value Stream is the basis of Lean Budgeting, which means:
1) eliminate wasteful project-based funding and cost-accounting overhead (eliminate this fluff), and
2) a development process (i.e., the Lean Agile Software Factory) that is responsive to market needs… Business Agility is what SAFe is about.
The whole Factory (Value Stream) is now setup and funded; customers are ready to pull value from it… so, go on and produce valuable things according to what market demands/needs!
And… remember… Time-to-Value and Time-To-Market are paramount – hence be Lean… have that Lean Thinking (Mindset) … remove all wastefulness (Muda) and fluff (Muri and Mura) in order to shorten Lead Time (Wait Time).
