First Principles Thinking and Innovation

This is where real transformation happens!

Step 1: Break things down to the basic truths and rebuild new solutions from the ground up – not copying old ways

Step 2: Apply that to innovation

Traditional: “Let’s make small improvement to what we already sell”

First Principles Thinker might say: “What customers really need?”

“If we started from zero, what’s the simplest way to meet the need?”

Experiment!

This means, LPM leaders fund experiments, not just projects.

3) Connect “First Principles Thinking” to experimentation

1) Ask: “What do we believe will create value?”

2) Then form a “Hypothesis” – SAFe promotes creating hypothesis when writing Epics.

3) Build it, then test, and measure

4) Learn and adjust – pivot, continue, or kill the project.

This cycle keeps the team close to truth – not opinions.
