First Principles Thinking and LPM

Imagine you are an LPM leader. Your job is to make sure investments, teams, and products all move the business towards its goals.

Most leaders might say:

“Let’s just do what our competitors are doing.”

or

“Let’s fund the biggest projects.”

Here is how “First Principles Thinking” LPM leader would say:

1) “What’s the purpose of the portfolio?”

To deliver value that helps the customer and the business.

2) “What makes the value to happen?”

Flow! Ideas moving smoothy from strategy to delivery.

3) “What breaks the flow?”

Bottlenecks, overloaded teams, unclear priorities.

4) What are the essential truths?”

  • People can focus on only a few things well
  • Work should align to strategy not politics
  • Learning faster creates better outcomes
