Knowing what makes a person change for the negative (avoidance-response) and for the positive (approach/reward-response) is handy in transformational coaching.

In this series, we’ve used David Rock’s ‘SCARF’ neuroscience model as applied within the context of transformational coaching.

You can use SCARF with transformational coaching as you help with the team’s transformational phases: forming, storming, norming, performing … and adjourning. You can inject the theory of SCARF as you formulate focused steps for your coachees to take… to help them transition from one phase to the next phase.
