An expanded answer on Efficiency, continued…

5) Too much stuff lying around (Inventory)

You have 500 cups, 20 bags of sugar, and a mountain of lemons.

Result: They take up space, and some lemons go bad before you use them.

6) People doing work wrong (defects)

You forget the sugar in some cups – now your customers get sour faces.

Result: You have to start over and remake it.

7) Not using people’s ideas (unused talent)

Your little sister has a great idea to add a cute sign to get more customers – but you never listen.

Result: You miss a chance to sell more lemonade.

8) Transportation

Your lemons are stored in the garage, sugar is in the kitchen, and cups are in the box at the back of the house. Every time you make lemonade, you walk back and forth to get each item.

Result: You waste time walking instead of selling.

Lean teaches you to spot these wastes and fix them so you save time, save money, and make better lemonade!

Challenge: Think of your current process (your value stream – the steps taken to create value) at work. Do you see in that process where you can apply Lean to make it efficient or more efficient? Write / doodle your process and your process improvement on a piece of paper.
